Sue Amsbury announces candidacy for Lakefield Ward councillor

Sue Amsbury has announced she is running for Lakefield Ward Councillor in the upcoming Selwyn Township municipal election.

Amsbury is a fourth-generation Selwyn Township resident. She grew up in Bridgenorth and now lives in Lakefield. She spent 35 years working as a laboratory technician for a large corporation, including more than 15 years as co-chair of the company's Health and Safety Committee. She also mentored students working in the laboratory during her career.

Sue Amsbury has announced she is seeking election as Lakefield Ward Councillor (Ward 30) in the 2026 Selwyn Township municipal election.

Amsbury has experience as a small business owner and spent 10 years coordinating charitable events that raised funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. She is currently a member of the Lakefield Village Lions Club.

This is Amsbury's first campaign for elected office. In announcing her candidacy, she said she hopes to bring her work, leadership, business and volunteer experience to council.

Her stated priorities include responsible growth, fiscal accountability, supporting local businesses, protecting the character of Lakefield, and improving communication between residents and council.

Amsbury said she believes growth should be supported by the infrastructure and services needed by the community and that residents should feel heard by their elected representatives.

If elected, Amsbury said she would focus on listening to residents, asking questions and making informed decisions on their behalf.

Amsbury joins Michael Barrett in the race for Lakefield Ward Councillor (Ward 30). Barrett has also filed his nomination papers and is seeking election to the position currently held by Lakefield Councillor John Boyko. Boyko is running for deputy mayor of Selwyn Township.

As of this posting, the candidates who have announced their candidacies so far are:

  • Mayor: Ron Black

  • Deputy Mayor: John Boyko

  • Lakefield Ward Councillor (Ward 30): Michael Barrett and Sue Amsbury

  • Ennismore Ward Councillor (Ward 10): Mary Coulas

  • Smith Ward Councillor (Ward 20): Brian Henry

The deadline to file nomination papers is Friday, August 21, 2026. Nomination papers may be filed at the Selwyn Township municipal office, 1310 Centre Line, Selwyn, from May 1 to August 20 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and on August 21 between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The municipal election will take place on Monday, October 26, 2026.
