Local youth recognized at Lakefield Youth Unlimited fundraising dinner; $28,000 raised

By Stacey Sullivan

Two local youth were honoured at Lakefield Youth Unlimited’s (LYU) 22nd Annual Fundraising Dinner, held October 16 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 77 in Lakefield. The sold out event raised $28,000 to support youth programming across Lakefield and surrounding areas.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Peter Bishop Youth Volunteer of the Year Award, which recognizes young people who demonstrate exceptional leadership, commitment, and compassion in serving others.

This year’s recipients, Aliegha Stencell and Brandon O’Boyle, were recognized for their dedication to LYU programs and their positive influence among their peers. Their example reflects the spirit of service and community championed by the late Reverend Peter Bishop.

The sold-out dinner brought together community members, local leaders, and supporters for an inspiring evening of stories, music, and heartfelt connection. The funds raised will go toward leadership development, mental health resources, recreational programs, and operational costs that allow LYU to continue its mission of empowering local youth.

Guests enjoyed a solo performance by Ethan Garbutt, a member of the Lakefield Children’s Chorus and Musical Theatre Group, along with remarks from Selwyn Deputy Mayor Ron Black. Staff and community members shared moving stories about the real-life impact of LYU’s programs.

A full house at the Lakefield Legion came together in support of local youth, helping Lakefield Youth Unlimited raise $28,000 at its annual fundraising dinner.

Caleb Posthumus, Jr. High Outreach Worker, led ten members of the Student Leadership Team, who greeted guests, served tables, and brought contagious positivity to the evening.

Although the total came in just shy of the $30,000 goal, LYU expressed deep gratitude for the ongoing support from the community and looks forward to building on this momentum to reach even more youth and families in the year ahead.
