Rising water levels prompt flood warning across Trent-Severn Waterway

Parks Canada Agency has advised that water levels entering the region will remain high and are expected to rise an additional 30-46 cm over the next 1-2 weeks. Otonabee Conservation issued a Flood Warning for the TrentSevern Waterway on April 10, 2026.

Flows from major tributaries to the Kawartha Lakes, including the Burnt and Gull Rivers, are expected to peak within the next week and will impact area lakes, including Pigeon, Upper and Lower Buckhorn, Stoney, Chemong, Lovesick, Clear and Katchewanooka, for up to two weeks. Dams throughout the system are fully open, meaning they are not holding back water.

Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to take precautions to protect life and property and to avoid fast-moving water. Secure or remove docks and shoreline structures and move items such as lawn furniture and landscaping features to higher ground.

Households in vulnerable areas are encouraged to consider sandbagging around key entry points. Sandbags can be purchased at local hardware stores, and sand may be sourced through landscape suppliers or excavating companies. Empty topsoil bags are also an effective alternative and can be reused for gardening. Free sand is also available at the Township of Selwyn Public Works Yard (1280 Centre Line).

Sandbagging Tips:

  • Focus on vulnerable areas such as window wells, door sills, and vents.

  • Do not sandbag entire properties, as this may redirect or trap water.

  • Use manageable bags (under 35 lbs), filled halfway.

  • Place sandbags on plastic or a tarp for improved sealing.

  • Stack in alternating layers (lengthwise, then perpendicular).

  • Build a base three times as wide as the height.

Residents are reminded to:

  • Secure or remove shoreline structures

  • Move outdoor and basement items to higher levels

  • Disconnect hydro or gas services if required

  • Follow local health guidance for well water safety

Water levels can be monitored through the Trent-Severn Waterway, Water Survey of Canada and Otonabee Conservation websites.

Emergency Contacts:

  • Life-threatening emergency: 911

  • Hydro One: 1-888-664-9376 (electrical disconnects)

  • Enbridge Gas: 1-877-362-7434 (gas shut off)

The Township will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates in coordination with partner agencies.
