Michael Barrett announces candidacy for Lakefield Ward councillor
Michael Barrett has announced he is running for Lakefield Ward Councillor (Ward 30) in Selwyn Township in the upcoming municipal election.
In announcing his candidacy, Barrett highlighted his involvement in the community through the Lakefield Legion (Branch 77), the Lakefield & District Historical Society, where he serves as vice chair, and PROBUS Lakefield. He is also known for sharing stories about Lakefield's history and local heritage.

Barrett said he hopes to bring more than 30 years of executive leadership experience to council. A retired chief executive officer of Gay Lea Foods Co-operative, he said he would apply a systematic and process-driven approach to community outreach and local governance.
A resident of the municipality for approximately 17 years, Barrett said he believes in preserving the community while planning for its future. In his announcement, he said he looks forward to meeting with residents over the coming months to hear their concerns and priorities.
Barrett is seeking election as Lakefield Ward Councillor (Ward 30). The seat is currently held by John Boyko, who has announced his candidacy for deputy mayor of Selwyn Township.
As of the time of publication, Ron Black has announced he is running for mayor, while incumbent Mayor Sherry Senis has not announced whether she will seek re-election. Mary Coulas is seeking re-election as Ennismore Ward Councillor (Ward 10). As of July 13, 2026, no candidates have announced for Smith Ward Councillor (Ward 20).
The deadline to file nomination papers is Friday, August 21, 2026. Nomination papers may be filed at the Selwyn Township municipal office, 1310 Centre Line, from May 1 to August 20 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and on August 21 between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
The municipal election will take place on October 26, 2026.
