Lakefield Youth Unlimited’s Gym Night continues to offer a safe space after 20 years

By Stacey Sullivan

For more than two decades, Lakefield Youth Unlimited (LYU) has been creating safe spaces for youth in the Lakefield area, and one of it’s longest running and cornerstone programs will mark it’s 20th year this fall.

Gym Night runs on Thursday evenings from October until June, welcoming anywhere from 50-80 local youth in grades 6-9 each week. At a time when many youth are spending an increasing amount of time in front of screens, Gym Night provides a weekly opportunity to put down their devices, be active, and connect with other local youth and volunteers. The weekly drop-in program consists of gym activities like basketball and floor hockey, arts and crafts, and board games, but it provides much more than a fun night with friends.

“I think what’s special about Gym Night is that it’s a safe space for any kid, anyone, to be themselves,” says Gym Night Coordinator Hailey Jones, “Truly and 100% themselves.”

The program runs for 1.5 hours each week, but there are several hours of prep time behind the scenes, and approximately 35 student leaders and volunteers who support the program.

“We have so many amazing volunteers who get to know these kids, help them recognize that this is a safe place,” said Discipleship Coordinator Matt Rachar, “I think the kids feel comfortable, feel secure.”

Through his position at LYU, Rachar offers spiritual care and support to staff and volunteers. He also supervises LYU’s Outreach Workers and offers support to Jones as the Gym Night Coordinator. Rachar said the program supports more than just youth.

“I’ve seen a lot of good things happen with the volunteers,” he said, “They’re coming to help, but it’s also a good space for them to learn, to grow, to ask questions as well.”

Rachar said volunteers support the program for many reasons, “There are people that want to help with the food portion of the night, to help the kids who have some food insecurity, and to make sure the kids are being fed, that they’re getting nutritious food.”

The food portion of the evening also includes a spiritual conversation.

“It's not something we want to force down anybody's throat or say this is the way you have to go, but we do try and encourage and share the joy that we have,” Rachar said.

“Through those talks, we're able to share a little bit of that joy. We try to offer it in a gentle, humble way. But in a way that, hopefully, they understand and can cause them to think and give space for asking questions.”

“For the kids that need a meal, need to be fed — spiritually, mentally, physically — that is the place where they can come and feel fully beloved and cared for.”

Reaching 20 years is a milestone that would not be possible without the support of the community. Contributions from local businesses, churches, and individuals have helped make programs like Gym Night possible over the years.

LYU’s annual Fundraising Dinner is one way the community can support its programs. This year’s dinner will take place on Thursday, October 22 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 77 in Lakefield. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner served at 6:00 p.m. The evening will include a chicken dinner, opportunities for community connection, and inspiring stories of transformation made possible through LYU’s work. This year’s fundraising goal is $40,000.

The annual event often sells out. Tickets can be purchased online at www.lakefieldyouthunlimited.com or by calling the LYU Barn at 705-651-0156 before October 15.

Those unable to attend the dinner can still support LYU and its programs. Donations can be made online at yfc.ca/lakefield/donate, dropped off at the LYU Barn at 25 Bridge Street in Lakefield, or mailed to PO Box 1178, Lakefield, ON, K0L 2H0.

The 20th year of Gym Night will begin on October 1. The weekly program runs on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Lakefield District Public School, welcoming youth in Grades 6-9 to drop in, take part, and connect with others. New youth and volunteers are also welcome.

Anyone wanting more information about Gym Night is encouraged to contact LYU at 705-651-0156 or lakefield@youthunlimitedkaw.com.

Rachar noted that after two decades, the program continues to connect youth, volunteers, and the community.

“I think there’s a space for everybody, no matter where they’re from, which is also why this program has lasted for so long and why so many different kids from different walks of life all come into the same space.”
