Lawn watering ban remains in effect for Lakefield
On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, Selwyn Township confirmed in a special newsletter that the lawn watering ban in Lakefield remains in effect.
While the ban was first implemented due to a watermain break, ongoing drought conditions had already been placing significant strain on Lakefield’s water system. Lawn watering uses potable (drinking) water, and the system can only produce a limited amount due to permits and processing constraints — regardless of river levels.
This summer’s drought, combined with increased lawn watering, caused demand to rise by nearly 50% over last year.
The location of the watermain break limited the ability to move water to the west side of Lakefield, and the ban was needed to immediately stabilize the system. Township waterworks staff worked around the clock to maintain critical drinking water and firefighting services.
Although the break has been repaired, easing pressure on the system, water availability in these dry conditions is still a concern.
Selwyn Township states that their priority remains protecting essential water needs, and they thank everyone for their continued cooperation. Township staff will continue to monitor conditions.
